Artex ceilings made flat
Swirls, stipple and combed patterns gone — covered safely and skimmed to a flat, modern ceiling.
Artex Removal & Ceiling Skimming in Tameside & Greater Manchester
Artex is on ceilings in a huge number of Tameside houses, and almost everyone wants rid of it eventually. The safe approach depends on the depth of the pattern and the age of the house.
Anything applied before the mid-1980s can contain a small amount of chrysotile asbestos. That's not a reason to panic, but it is a reason never to sand or scrape it dry. We either skim over it or overboard it.
Skim over
For shallow patterns: bonding agent, a fill coat to knock the texture back, then a finish coat polished flat. Quickest and cheapest, and it leaves the existing material completely undisturbed.
Overboarding
For deep swirls or ceilings that have already cracked: 9.5mm board screwed through into the joists, joints taped and the whole ceiling skimmed. It also gives you a chance to add a little insulation or new downlight positions.
Clean work
Room sheeted floor to ceiling, doorways sealed, waste bagged. Ceilings make more mess than any other plastering job, so this part matters.

Artex Removal & Ceiling Skimming — common questions
If the house was decorated before around 1985 it might. It's only a risk if disturbed, which is why we cover rather than remove. Testing is inexpensive if you want certainty.
