Skimming & Re-Skimming

Skimming & Re-Skimming in Tameside & Greater Manchester

Re-skimming is the job people ring us about most. Tired walls, patchy repairs, a room that's been papered over for thirty years, or a new extension that needs pulling together with the rest of the house.

The difference between an average skim and a good one shows up at about four in the afternoon, when the light comes across the wall sideways. That's what we're working to.

Preparing the surface

Wallpaper comes off, not skimmed over. Old adhesive is washed down, blown patches are cut out and made good, and every surface gets the right primer — PVA on plaster, a grit primer on painted or non-porous surfaces so the new coat has something to grip.

The finish

Two coats, trowelled up in stages as it pulls in, then a final polish with a wet trowel. Corners and reveals are run with a rule so the angles are genuinely straight rather than eased in with filler afterwards.

Ready to decorate

We leave the room swept, edges cut in clean at the skirting, and tell you honestly how long to wait before painting. Rushing the mist coat is the single most common reason a good skim ends up looking patchy.

Questions

Skimming & Re-Skimming — common questions

Tap the wall. If it sounds solid and only the surface is rough, a skim will do. If it sounds hollow over large areas the backing has failed and it wants taking off and reboarding. We check this at the quote.
