Rendering in Tameside & Greater Manchester

Render on the wrong wall causes more damp than it prevents. Solid stone and older brick need a breathable system; modern blockwork can take a standard sand and cement or a through-coloured silicone finish.

Around Mossley, Stalybridge and Glossop we see a lot of hard cement render cracked over stone, trapping water behind it. Getting that off and replacing it correctly is a regular job for us.

Choosing the system

Sand and cement for blockwork and general repairs, silicone thin-coat for a low-maintenance coloured finish, and lime-based breathable render where the wall needs to let moisture out. We explain the trade-offs before you choose.

Preparation

Failed render removed, joints raked out, beads and stop-ends set, mesh reinforcement where movement is likely, and the bell cast kept clear of the damp course so water sheds away from the wall rather than into it.

Repairs and patching

Not every wall needs doing in full. We patch and colour-match where it's sensible, and say so rather than quoting for an entire elevation.

Questions

Rendering — common questions

It can stop penetrating damp through a porous wall. It won't stop rising damp, and non-breathable render on a stone wall often makes damp worse.
