How long does damp proofing last?

A correctly installed chemical damp course should outlast the plaster on top of it. Ours carry a 10 year written guarantee, and in practice they go far longer where drainage and ventilation are kept in order.

Will the damp come back?

Not if the cause was diagnosed properly. The usual reason damp returns is that the plaster was replaced without dealing with what was wetting the wall, or salts were skimmed over instead of being isolated with a render coat.

Damp is the one area where guessing costs people the most money. Plenty of walls we're called to look at have already been injected once by somebody else, when the actual problem was a blocked gutter or a raised path bridging the damp course.

So we survey first, free of charge. You get a straight explanation of what's causing it, what we'd do about it and what it costs — and if the fix is pointing or drainage rather than a damp course, we'll tell you that too.

The survey

We check moisture readings at height intervals up the wall, look at external ground levels, gutters, downpipes and pointing, and check ventilation inside. That combination is what separates rising damp from penetrating damp from condensation — the three look similar on the wall and need completely different work.

Treatment

Where a new damp proof course is needed we inject a silicone cream damp course at mortar-bed level, hack off the contaminated plaster to the height the salts have reached, and re-render in a salt-retardant system before skimming. Skipping the render stage is why salts come back through new paint.
