Penetrating damp shows up as isolated patches that darken after heavy rain and fade in dry spells. It can appear at any height, which is the quickest way to tell it apart from rising damp.

Finding the source
We work outside in: gutters and downpipes, pointing, spalled or frost-damaged brick, cracked render, window sills without drips, chimney flashing and old flue linings. Almost every patch of penetrating damp has a physical route in, and it's usually visible once you know what to look at.
Stopping the water
Repointing in a matching mortar, cutting out and replacing damaged brick, patching or renewing render, and applying a breathable water-repellent treatment on exposed elevations where that's the right answer.
Making good inside
Once the wall can dry, damaged plaster is removed, the area re-rendered where salts are present, and the wall skimmed back in so the repair disappears.
