Rising Damp Treatment in Tameside & Greater Manchester

Rising damp is groundwater drawn up through the masonry because the original damp proof course has failed, been bridged, or was never there. In older Tameside stone and brick terraces, all three are common.

The giveaway is a horizontal tide mark around a metre up the wall, often with a white salt bloom, and damage that's worse in winter. It doesn't affect upstairs rooms — if you have damp on a first-floor wall, it isn't rising damp and we'll look elsewhere.

Diagnosis

Readings taken up the wall at intervals, plus a look outside. Raised patios, new driveways and render carried down past the damp course all bridge it, and in those cases lowering ground levels can solve the problem without a single injection.

Installing a new damp course

Holes drilled into a mortar bed above ground level, silicone damp proof cream injected to form a continuous barrier, holes made good. It's quiet, quick and there's no need to move out.

Replastering the wall

Contaminated plaster is removed to 300mm above the highest tide mark. The wall is re-rendered in a salt-retardant mix, then skimmed. Skirtings go back once the wall has dried. This stage is not optional — hygroscopic salts left in old plaster keep pulling moisture out of the air for years.

Questions

Rising Damp Treatment — common questions

A failed, missing or bridged damp proof course lets groundwater travel up through the brickwork by capillary action. Bridging — a raised path, render over the DPC, rubble in a cavity — is the most common cause we find in this area.
