Plastering in Tameside & Greater Manchester
Most of the plastering we do is in ordinary Tameside houses — stone terraces in Mossley, 1930s semis in Ashton, new-build boxrooms in Hyde. The job is nearly always the same underneath: work out what's on the wall, decide whether it can be skimmed or wants taking off, then get it flat.
We've been doing it for over 25 years, which mainly means we know when to say a wall needs boarding rather than skimming. That conversation happens at the quote stage, not halfway through the job when you've already paid for something that won't last.
Skimming over existing walls
If the backing is sound, a two-coat skim is usually the quickest and cheapest route. We check for hollow patches by tapping the wall through, cut out anything that's blown, PVA or grit-prime depending on the surface, then skim and polish. Two coats, no shortcuts — a single thin pass is what causes crazing later.
Reboarding and dot-and-dab
Where old lime plaster is loose, or a wall has been chased about for wiring, boarding it out is the honest answer. We dot-and-dab onto masonry or fix to timbers, tape the joints and skim over the lot. On stone walls we'll talk to you about breathability before anything goes up.
Ceilings and repairs
Sagging lath and plaster ceilings, water-damaged patches, artex you've had enough of. Ceilings are dirty work so we sheet the room properly, take the old material out into bags, and hoover before we leave each day.

Plastering — common questions
Two to seven days for a normal room, longer for ceilings and chimney breasts. Wait until the whole surface has gone one even pale pink before you paint, then use a watered-down mist coat first.
